A bar or bat mitzvah is a Jewish boy or girl’s most important day of their Jewish life. In a single day, a child becomes an adult in the eyes of Jewish law.
Generation after generation, children await this day with anticipation and excitement. Following months of studying and preparation culminate in a special day surrounded by friends and family.

Not every child’s bar or bat mitzvah is the joyous occasion it should be however. Some children prepare for this rite of passage having lost a parent. The excitement of this special day is mixed with nostalgia and often uncertainty. “Who will buy me my tefillin?”, “who will I go with to choose my suit or dress?”, “who will be by my side as I receive wishes of mazal tov?”... these are some of the thoughts that might cloud what should otherwise be a child’s most memorable day. Some orphaned children face the added struggle of living in poverty. For these children, a party to celebrate this special day is nothing more than an unattainable dream.
How can we ensure that a child's bar or bar mitzvah is as joyous an occasion as it deserves to be?
A Smile of a Child works tirelessly to support bar and bat mitzvah children who have been struck by the tragedy of losing a parent, to ensure that their bar and bat mitzvah celebrations are what they’ve dreamed of. We provide these children with tefillin, clothing for the celebration, a party for close family and friends, and a gift.
We may not be able to bring back what these children have lost, but we can bring joy to their special day.

As part of the Foundation’s plans to expand in North America, it has appointed Mr. Oren Chervinsky as an official Board Member of the Foundation. The goal is to increase sponsorships of Bar/Bat Mitzvah for the number of orphaned children residing in Israel and build a stronger bond between Jewish children in both countries.

A Smile of a Child Foundation sponsors Bar/Bat Mitzvot of orphaned children in Israel so they can celebrate one of the most important milestones in Jewish life.

Expansion efforts in other countries are currently underway and will be announced accordingly.

Aventura, FL, USA, February 18th 2018 - A Smile of a Child Foundation announced today its plans to expand fundraising efforts in Mexico to increase sponsorships of Bar/Bat Mitzvah for the number of orphaned children residing in Israel and build a stronger bond between Jewish children in both countries.

A Smile of a Child Foundation sponsors Bar/Bat Mitzvot of orphaned children in Israel so they can celebrate one of the most important milestones in Jewish life.

Earlier this month, recently appointed Managing Director, Ivan Warman and Founder, Sam Hershberg, visited the Mexican capital to meet with several key community leaders, including the director of the Colegio Hebreo Sefaradi, one of Mexico City’s Jewish day schools. They proposed the establishment of a program that matches soon-to-be Bar/Bat Mitzvah children in the school with orphaned children of the same age in Israel. Each Mexican family will sponsor one Bar/Bat Mitzvah child in Israel and the two boys/girls will establish a study-buddy relationship throughout the year leading up to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. The program will begin to roll out later this year pairing up children in 6th and 7th grade.

As part of the foundation’s plans to expand in Latin America, it has appointed a new regional director for Mexico, Mrs. Vivi Viskin. Additionally, Mr. Marcos Meta and Nathan Feldman has been appointed as Board Member. Plans for other countries are underway and will be announced at a later date.
